Short Description 433 Eros is an S-type near-Earth asteroid, the second-largest near-Earth asteroid after 1036 Ganymed. It was discovered in 1898 and was the first near-Earth asteroid discovered. It was the first asteroid orbited by an Earth probe (in 2000). Eros is a Mars-crosser asteroid, the first known to come within the orbit of Mars. The NEAR Shoemaker probe visited Eros twice, first with a 1998 flyby, and then by orbiting it in 2000 when it extensively photographed its surface. On February 12, 2001, at the end of its mission, it landed on the asteroid's surface using its maneuvering jets. 433 Eros - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Discovered by Carl Gustav Witt Discovery date August 13, 1898 Type Asteroid AddInfo Amor group Satellite of Sun Minor planet number 433 Orbit Prograde Rotation Direct Apoapsis 09 266 638 000 km Periapsis 09 169 569 000 km Semi-major axis 09 218 103 000 km Distance from Sun 01 1.458 au Eccentricity 0.223 Orbital period 1.76 year | 643 days Orbital speed 02 24.36 km/s Mean anomaly 320.215° Inclination to the ecliptic 010.829° Longitude of the ascending node 304.401° Argument of periapsis 178.664° Diameter/Size 02 16.84 km Dimensions 34.4×11.2×11.2 km Mass 1015×6.687 kg Density 01 2.4 g/cm3 Surface gravity 0.0059 m/s2 Escape velocity 02 10.3 m/s Rotation period 0.2194 day | 5 hour 16 min Albedo geometric 0.25 Temperature mean 03 227 K | −46 °C Apparent magnitude +7.0 to +15 Absolute magnitude 11.16 - Comments
